The Power Grid Corporation of India, a Government of India enterprise, which is in the business of transmission of power from power projects in north-eastern region, connecting the national grid through their 400 KV, 220 KV, 132 KV lines, is found dealing with extra high tension power in a dangerous manner, ignoring all the provisions of security and safety codes and guidelines of the Government of India.

The districts of Lakhimpur and Dhemaji and parts of Arunachal Pradesh have been totally cut off from the rest of the country following washing away of a portion of National Highway-52 by flood waters and it will take some time to restore road communication even as the flood situation in Lakhimpur district remained grave with as many as 11 breaches in the embankments. Talking to The Assam Tribune, Lakhimpur Deputy Commissioner, Manish Thakur said that though the weather condition improved today, the situation remained grave today.

At least 15 people, including seven women and four children, were killed today in landslides across Arunachal Pradesh following incessant rains for the last 30 hours, throwing the transport and telecommunication networks out of gear. Police said rescue operations were being hampered by the continued downpour, adding that the casualties could increase to over 20. The casualty figure were so far available from Itanagar, Nirjuli and Naharlagun only, with the other areas of the State still inaccessible through roads or telephone.

Over 200 people have been attacked by gastroenteritis in several villages under Namsai sub-division of Lohit district in Arunachal Pradesh over the past few days. Official sources said here today that no deaths were reported from any of the affected villages so far. Many villages, including Philobari, Silatoo, Lekang and Khowji, had been hit by the disease. Local medical officers visited the affected areas and treated about 200 patients. However, proper treatment could not be provided, following the lack of adequate medicines.

As a part of this initiative under Green Governance programme, WWF-India's Assam and Arunachal Pradesh State offices in association with the Army School, Shillong organised a two-day environment education programme at Army School 101, Shillong for teachers and students recently.

The Forest Department, in a major move against the illegal trade of timber, seized two salis of logs while they were being smuggled from Arunachal Pradesh through the waterway of the Brahmaputra at Balijan in Tinsukia today. A haul of three hundred logs was made during the operation, which was conducted jointly by forest officials and personnel from the forest ranges of Dibrugarh, Doomdooma and Dibru Saikhowa.
