The Opposition Congress and the JD(S) are armed with the Lokayukta report on mining scam to attack the ruling BJP in both the Houses of the Legislature, on Monday.

Both the parties are likely to move adjournment motion separately for not initiating action against people who are into 'illegal' mining in parts of Bellary bordering Andhra Pradesh.

The report submitted by Lokayukta Santhosh Hegde on illegal mining in the state points out to several violations and large scale encroachment of land.

Over 248.6 sq km forest area was de-reserved in the year 2000 to allow mining operations though the entire region was declared as environmentally sensitive.

BANGALORE: The Karnataka government has announced a new mineral policy (2008) to mobilise funds from the Bellary mining lobby for the Legislative Assembly byelections and the next Lok Sabha elections, alleged Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council V.S. Ugrappa here on Friday.

The State Cabinet has on Thursday approved the new mining policy, which among other things seeks to impose a ban on export of minerals, especially iron ore, from the fresh mining leases in the State. However, the new rules does not apply to those who have already secured mining leases.
