Forest officials have taken measures to check wild elephant menace in Lingdalli in Tarikere taluk. Officials have been directed to protect the crops, said MLA D S Suresh.

Speaking after inaugurating various developmental works in Nandibattalu in Lingadalli, he said action plan has been prepared to help the residents of Lingadahalli.

Worms feeding on the roots of areca trees and yellow leaf disease have come as a blow to the areca growers of the region. The loss incurred due to these two factors have worsened the condition of the growers.

Property worth Rs 23.4 lakh has been damaged owing to the rain havoc in the district on Wednesday.

In Sringeri taluk, property worth Rs 13 lakh has been damaged. This includes 0.5 km road in Kavadi-Shyanuvalli, Palgadi-Melpal and 0.6 km road in Balehonnur.

The incessant rains have claimed two more lives, one each in Dakshina Kannada and Chikmagalur.

A woman was washed away in a stream at Aranthod in Sullia on Monday. The deceased is Baby (65). In Chikmagalur, a girl was washed away in a stream near Kundur estate in Mudigere taluk on Monday. The deceased is Sheela (15).

A sum of Rs 15 crore has been sanctioned for desiltation of tanks in the taluk, said MLA K M Krishnamurthy.

Talking to reporters after launching disiltation works of Tangali tank near here on Monday, he said the amount has been sanctioned from different sources.

Nabard has released Rs 41 crore for the development of 52 rural roads in the district, said sources in the Public Works Department.
