TAMBARAM: Two urban local bodies in the southern suburbs of Chennai have demonstrated the use of applying organic manure generated in their compost yards to grow vegetables in kitchen gardens maintained by them.

For the first time ever, segregation and composting of daily waste commenced at the Sonsodo dumping yard on Thursday with technical expertise from Goa Foundation, with Chief Minister, Digambar Kamat promising all help and co-operation to the Civic body to tide over the situation.

Composting units became a reality in the Commercial Capital on Tuesday as per the orders of the High Court mandating the Civic bodies to set up these units to tackle garbage problem.

Plans by the Margao Municipal Council to set up composting units to treat wet and bio-degradable waste has hit a block.
A total of 60 units were planned across the city - three units in each of the 20 wards - but the Civic body has succeeded to erect only 10-11 units so far.
