Industry contributes directly and indirectly (through consumed electricity) about 37% of the global greenhouse gas emissions, of which over 80% is from energy use. Total energy-related emissions, which were 9.9 GtCO2 in 2004, have grown by 65% since 1971. Even so, industry has almost continuously improved its energy efficiency over the past decades.

The recently announced Rs53,000 crore all-cash subsidy for the fertiliser industry, up from Rs30,000 crore announced in this year's Budget was a critical move by the government to save the fertiliser industry. But this is not enough. Only Rs22,000 crore will soon be released to players in the industry, the balance is expected over the next few months.

THIS could be the first major disinvestment the government may undertake after winning the trust vote. According to government sources, it plans to dilute its stake in the two public sector fertiliser companies: Hindustan Fertiliser Corp (HFC) and Fertiliser Corporation of India (FCIL). The companies have been sick for a decade and the government has decided to invite private players to pick up a stake in the company.

Guntur, Sept. 3: The district collector, Mr B. Venkatesam, on Wednesday said there would be no scarcity of fertilisers in the district with the beginning of the arrival of stocks to railway yard, Nehru Nagar in Guntur.

They staged a rasta roko in Kurnool and Kallur mandals protesting the lackadaisical attitude of the officials in the supply of fertilisers. They alleged that their crops are withering in the absence of fertilisers in time. The farmers who stormed the market yard in the morning, came out in large numbers by raising slogans.
