Food safety in Pakistan

Over the last few decades, the question of ensuring adequate food safety standards has evolved into a much more complicated problem with a series of interconnected factors to be considered. The evolution of science and technology such as the development of high precision analytical equipments and improved agricultural and preservation techniques have made it possible to obviate the manifold safety hazards.

Since 2006 Food Safety has become a concern that is increasingly referred to in the media. Government has undertaken to promote and strengthen food safety aspects through putting regulatory norms and guidelines into effective enforcement.

Food Safety in Sri Lanka

In Sri Lanka there is a Food Control System under the Ministry of Healthcare, Nutrition and Uva Wellassa Development. Director General of Health Services is the Chief Food Authority and also the Chairman of the Food Advisory Committee (FAC) established in terms of the Food Act No. 26 of 1980. The FAC is comprised of 19 members. They represent various stake-holders in food safety from Government Departments / Ministries as well as trade and consumers. There is also a Food Advisory Technical Sub Committee that deliberates on issues referred to it on a regular basis. The main function of the FAC is to advise the Minister in charge of the subject of health on food safety policy matters. The Food Control Administration Unit is in charge of the general administration of regulatory and training activities of the country.

Bhutan regulates public health and safety in regards to food under the Food Act of 2005. The Food Act establishes the National Food Quality and Safety Commission and the Bhutan Agriculture and Food Regulatory Authority ("BAFRA"), both of which are overseen by the Ministry of Agriculture. While the Ministry of Agriculture is singularly authorized to author regulations under the Food Act, the Minister of Agriculture may delegate authority to ministries responsible for health, trade, and customs.

In Bangladesh, the food safety and quality control framework consists of Laws, Regulations & Standards, Administration & Inspection and Laboratory analytical services. Agriculture is the largest sector in Bangladesh economy. Its combine’s contribution (crops, forestry, fisheries, livestock etc.) to the country’s GDP and employment is more than one third and two third respectively. The food laws and regulations reflect this although major weaknesses within the legal framework still exist.
