There is no sewerage network in Jajmau, Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh where all the tannery units are situated. Thus, untreated domestic sewage generated from Jajmau area also gets mixed with industrial effluent that goes through the conveyance channel into CETP.

Submissions by Amicus Curiae regarding water pollution by tanneries at Jajmau, Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh and water pollution at Raniaa, Kanpur Dehat and Rakhi Mandi, Kanpur Nagar, Uttar Pradesh. Cumulative impact assessment as well as carrying capacity of industrial areas (Kanpur - Unnao belt) must be considered and undertaken before granting permission for setting up of any water polluting unit in the Ganga river basin.

Grievance in the application is against construction of toilets in flood plain zone of river Ganga by the Municipal Corporation, Rishikesh and discharge of untreated waste therefrom in river Ganga. No STP has been constructed to treat such waste.

The application seeks execution of NGT order, March 18, 2021 whereby directions were issued for remedial action against pollution by the polluting industrial activities discharging polluted effluents in river Bhella which meets Kosi river in Rampur, which is a tributary of Ramganga, which in turn is a tributary of river Ganga.

The NGT, January 4, 2022 directed the constitution of five member joint committee to look into the matter and take remedial action to ensure that no untreated sewage and waste goes into river Ganga and erring officers be made accountable for failures, if any found.
