The National Green Tribunal (NGT) in an interim order has stayed rat hole mining in Jaintia Hills.

The petitioners contended in the original application no 73/2014; M.A.No.174/2014 that the water bodies which are sources of water for human consumption and other related activities were severely contaminated in the downstream areas of Assam due to acid mine discharge from the mining areas in Jaintia Hills located in the upstream.

SHILLONG: The State Government is preparing the modalities for acquisition of land on behalf of the nine cement plants in Jaintia Hills to facilitate the process of compensatory afforestation.

SHILLONG, January 21: The CSWO has objected the proposal of the State government to come up with a ‘tripartite agreement’ with the cement plants in Jaintia Hills.

Proposal to buy, use land for afforestation programme

After as many as nine cement companies operating in Jaintia Hills were found to have violated provisions of the Forest Conservation Act, 1980, the said companies have now agreed to buy double of the land misused by them and subsequently use them as part of afforestation programmes.
