Alipurduar, Dec. 22: The forest department has decided to introduce swamp deer in Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary after it receives six of them from Lucknow Zoo.

In exchange, three almost-adult elephants will be sent to the zoo in Uttar Pradesh, V.K. Sood, the conservator of forest wildlife (north), said.

After poachers were suspected to be responsible for the death of one of the rhinoceros at Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary in north Bengal, senior forest officials have decided to fill up the post of security guards that are lying vacant for the past few years.

Poachers, suspected to be from Assam, had shot at the male rhino that died in Jaldapara yesterday with festering wounds.

Alipurduar, Sept. 27: Forest minister Ananta Roy has said any rescued elephant calf will from now on be handed over to Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary alone for rearing.
