Avalanches, lightning and flash floods in Jammu and Kashmir between Monday and Wednesday has claimed 16 lives and injured 30.

Snowfall subsided on Wednesday and major roads in the Valley were cleared by late afternoon though interior roads all over the valley were still not motorable. Similarly, power supply was restored to parts of the Capital but the rural districts were in darkness. Telecommunication and data services were also restored.

Cold wave today tightened its grip over Kashmir valley and Ladakh region where the minimum temperatures dipped several degrees below the freezing point.

Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, recorded a drop of over three degrees in the minimum temperature as the mercury settled at a low of minus 3.3 degrees Celsius last night, compared to 0.3 degrees Celsius the previous night.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), on Thursday, relaxed the criteria for power generation projects to qualify as mega power projects.

The inordinate delay in starting work on the 37.5-MW Parnai Hydel Power project has once again exposed government claims to make the state self-sufficient in power generation.

Execution of six mini hydel power projects is expected to complete by the end of 2014, while work allotment for the other four has been completed after the tendering procedure.

Srinagar witnessed minus 4.9°C on Sunday night, minus 4.6°C on Saturday night and minus 5.4°C on Friday night.

One dies of cold; train, air traffic remain hit

JAMMU: While cold wave continued to grip entire State including Kashmir valley and plain areas of Jammu region, Drass township in Kargil district recorded the lowest temperature of -27 degree celsius whereas, night temperature in Jammu has further receded to 5.7 degree celsius as Solar radiations have depleted to nearly 80 percent in the winter capital. Dense fog and mist continued to play havoc with the normal life of the people, causing suspension of some flights and disruption in the smooth movement of trains and vehicular traffic.

SRINAGAR/ JAMMU: There was no respite from intense cold and freezing temperature as the mercury plummeted further below the freezing point across the Kashmir today. The freezing temperature coupled with erratic power cuts has made the life difficult for the people in the Valley. Fringes of the world famous Dal Lake were frozen for the third consecutive day today, forcing the ‘Shikara’ owners to break the ice with their oars for rowing their Shikaras (boats). Some of the water taps were also frozen during the preceding night leading to temporary water crisis.
