The State government will buy 850 MW of power for two months from March 1 to mitigate the power shortage in the State, Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa announced in Bangalore on Tuesday.

Addressing a press conference, Yeddyurappa said the gap between the demand and supply of power exceeded nine million units per day as on Tuesday.

BANGALORE: The ground-breaking ceremony for the 4,000-MW greenfield thermal power project being taken up by the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) in Kudgi of Bijapur district would be held in March.

Hong Kong-based CLP Group company CLP Power India Pvt Ltd will invest $800 million (over Rs 3,700 crore)to augment its power generation capacity from renewable resources to 650 Mw by the end of this year.

Out of the total target, 346 Mw is under construction, while 104 Mw is operational. The company has also identified locations for building the remaining capacity.

Move follows unrest among farmers in some areas.

Farmers are set to become equity partners in renewable energy projects in Karnataka.

The State government is planning to purchase 200 MW power in addition to the 280 MW bought at a cost of Rs 4.50 per unit last week, to ensure regular supply of power during exams.

Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa, who also holds Energy portfolio, told reporters here on Monday that tenders will be floated in a few days.

''What the scientists are saying about global warming and the glaciers in North and South Poles melting and raising the sea level is all bull****!,'' observed Medical Education Minister Ramachandra Gowda here on Thursday.

The state of Karnataka is bestowed with good wind energy potential. Of the 48,561 MW wind energy potential identified by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) for the country, 12,950 MW has been assessed for Karnataka. According to the Karnataka Renewable Energy Development Limited, the total wind power installed capacity as of January 2010 stands at 1,368 MW.

Contractors were given Rs 13.42 crore. However, the progress is not even worth Rs one crore.

This is the condition of ambitious Rajiv Gandhi Rural Electrification project in the district. The project aimed at supplying electricity to 30,000 BPL families in 293 villages.

Hoteliers can reduce dependency on electricity and cut their power bill by installing solar heaters, Deepak Gupta, secretary, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) said here on Friday.
