Dispur has sought help from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to improve tourism after the sector was accorded top priority by the new Congress government in the state.

Principal secretary, tourism, Assam, H.S. Das, said a project proposal was sent to the ADB, which has given a positive nod, at a seminar on tourism yesterday.

Jorhat, May 20: A mini-Kaziranga is in the making on a sandbar along the Brahmaputra in northwest Jorhat.

A herd of wild buffaloes have been sighted inside Molai Kathonibari, a wooded area 16km from Jorhat town, for the first time.

The area already has a sizeable population of deer, a tigress with two cubs and is frequented by wild elephants.

Jorhat, The increasing number of wild buffaloes in Kaziranga National Park has given rise to the problem of serious food and territory crisis among the herbivorous animals living in the sanctuary. The buffalo population has dangerously overshadowed the population of the carnivorous animals.

It used to be just a petite piece of wilderness, but now it is among the most popular haunts for nature lovers. Pobitora, the natural refuge of the Indian rhino, has emerged as a major draw for Indian and foreign tourists alike.

Tour operators told The Assam Tribune that visitors to Pobitora have swelled in recent times, the reason being its close proximity to Guwahati.
