DIBRUGARH, March 8

Guwahati, March 7: To ensure that both development and wildlife blend harmoniously, WWF India has suggested a series of mitigative measures to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) so that wildlife in the Kaziranga-Karbi Anglong landscape which bisects Lumding reserve forest is not drastically affected by the development of NH-54E.

Grassland communities of Kaziranga National Park (KNP) classified as Eastern Wet Alluvial Grasslands. It comprised of tall grasses (61%) as well as short grasses (only 3%). Rapid periodic changes occurred due to recurrence of flood, erosion and alluvial depsition and have direct implications for the establishment of early successional species.

In the world famous Kaziranga National Park altogether 68 rhinos, 11 elephants and five tigers had died in the year 2010.

NUMALIGARH, Feb 21: The elephant census at Kaziranga National Park is going to start tomorrow. The area of KNP has been divided into 83 parts for the census. The census will continue for seven days. During the last census in KNP in 2008, 1,293 elephants were found.

The recent removal of encroachments around Kaziranga triggered strong protests by the Kaziranga Jeep Safari Association and other stakeholders.
