ORHAT, June 27: The third wave of flood of the year has taken a serious turn in the Kaziranga National Park (KNP) and the biggest river island Majuli today. The rising water of the river Brahmaputra has submerged many areas of the KNP and Majuli since last night and the condition further deteriorated this afternoon.

Proactive action on the part of the Forest Department could place Assam in the forefront of the tiger conservation programme in the country. This would be possible due to the advantages that the state already possesses, which include a stable and growing population of the highly protected species.

GUWAHATI, June 20: The Assam government today ordered restricting speed limit of vehicles passing through the Kaziranga National Park (KNP) to 40 kmph to ensure safety of the animals that are migrating to safe shelter in the higher reaches during the floods.

JORHAT, May 31: Hundreds of local people of Silveta area under Bokakhat subdivision of Golaghat district have rocked the Kaziranga National Park (KNP) today in protest against the killing of an innocent youth- Rahul Kutum, by the Kaziranga forest guards, making him a poacher fradulently.

Four poachers were killed in a gunfight with wildlife rangers at the famed Kaziranga National Park in Assam today, three days after seven poachers were arrested on the fringe of the sanctuary, officials said.

A wildlife warden said a group of six poachers entered the park early today and fired at an adult rhino near the Mihimukh range, although they failed to hit the target.

In a major break through on Tuesday the wildlife rangers arrested seven poachers, including two former forest guards and recovered a rhino horn near Kaziranga National Park a Unesco recognised world heritage centre of Assam.

The poachers were arrested on Tuesday when they were in the process of selling a rhino horn to an international animal organ smuggling syndicate.

Away from the public eye, an ambitious initiative could actually change the prospects for Kaziranga National Park as well as the district of Karbi Anglong. The forest department supported by WWF India and personnel of the Indian Army are preparing the eco-restoration of a landscape that extends over 1,000 sq km.
