The State Government has given the nod for installing garbage processing units based on modern technology in all the districts of the state. Local bodies will have to provide the necessary land and the full expenditure of installation of units will be borne by the State Government.

Briefing mediapersons on the cabinet decisions here on Thursday, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said that the government had succeeded in identifying four effective models for garbage treatment.

Half a dozen tourism projects are being implemented in the district at a cost of Rs. 5 crore by District Tourism Promotion Council this year.

Top on the agenda is the Thazhathangadi Beautification Project, being taken up at a cost of Rs.72.23 lakh. According to Jijo John, secretary of DTPC, the project will be implemented by KITCO and work will commence in a month.

The district administration will soon adopt stringent measures to curb the sale and use of tobacco and tobacco-based products in the vicinity of educational institutions.

Complying with the directions of the Health Department, the sale of such products has been banned within a radius of 400 yards from educational institutions.
