Specialist of ecology of rivers Michael Barber has said that the rivers could not be kept healthy if we ignore the chief reasons behind the pollution in rivers. He further added that the pollution should be seen in the context of the entire basin of the rivers, without considering it the pollution of the rivers could not be ameliorated.

The Comptroller and Auditor-General of India is planning a comprehensive audit of water pollution in India that would cover the extent and causes of pollution of lakes, rivers and ground water.

The aim of the audit would be to identify critical issues and suggest solutions that would help the government conserve and protect water resources more effectively, said Mr Vinod Rai, CAG, India.

Comptroller and Auditor General of India conducted an International Conference on Environment Audit about water pollution from 15-16, March 2010. This conference focused on the causes of pollution, action taken by governments and civil society to address this and environmental, management and legal interventions needed to put lakes, rivers and ground water on the path of sustainability.

The government's official auditor Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) today said it plans to undertake environmental audit of water pollution in India for which it has solicited people's participation.

The performance audit on 'Pollution of Rivers, Lakes and Groundwater in India' will be conducted by CAG during 2010-11.
