The Greens in the state are planning to move the National Green Tribunal (NGT) against the environmental clearance given by the State Environmental Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA) to 17 quarries at a time when the chairman’s post was vacant in the authority. The SEIAA is the nodal agency in the state that provides clearances for quarrying, sand mining and commercial projects in Kerala.

The National Green Tribunal has given an ultimatum to the Union ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) to come out with a plan of action on how it will implement the Kasturirangan committee report by March 24.

The NGT order came after MoEF said that states like Kerala and Karnataka objected to the report and asked for more time for its implementation. The MoEF made this plea while replying to the original PIL filed by Goa Foundation on implementation of the Madhav Gadgil report.
