Haryana Government has formulated Rs.10.21crore project for augmenting water supply in 23 villages of Mahendragarh district.

Chandigarh: Water woes in Haryana have further deepened. As if deficient rainfall was not enough, the water table has registered a substantial fall of half a metre since last year while it has dipped by nearly three metres in certain pockets of the state.

Though the water table has shown a marginal rise in a few areas, the increase is limited to districts plagued with saline water.

MAHENDERGARH: Widespread poverty in the villages of largely arid Mahendergarh district of Haryana ensured that it was the first district to be brought under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) when it was introduced in the state in February 2006. In view of an acute water shortage, the scheme mainly targeted digging of ponds.

CHANDIGARH: The Haryana Government on Wednesday signed a memorandum of understanding with the Hyderabad-based Naandi Foundation to implement a pilot project on community safe drinking water systems in select villages in the State in a phased manner.

The MoU was signed by Haryana Commissioner and Secretary, Public Works Department (Water Supply and Sanitation) Roshan Lal and National Director (Water Programme) Amit Jain on behalf of Naandi Foundation in the presence of Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and Water Supply and Sanitation Minister Randeep Singh Surjewala here.

The Haryana Cabinet has approved a pilot project for providing safe drinking water based on reverse osmosis and related technologies in select water quality affected villages in the Public-NGO-Community Mode through the Naandi Foundation of Hyderabad.

Announcing this after the Cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda disclosed that 100 villages would be taken up in the affected districts including Mewat, Mahendergarh, Jhajjar and Kaithal.

While the two states have decided to spend almost one-third of their five-year Plan for 2007-12 on power projects, they have also realised that the immediate need was to save energy. With that in mind, Punjab has tied up with a US major, Econoler International, to light the streets of municipal areas of the state.
