Ending monopoly of state-run mapping and exploration agencies, the government has permitted companies in possession of captive coal blocks to get further examination of the asset done by private firms.

The Ganigarike Rashtriya Horata Samiti (GRHS) on Thursday demanded a CBI probe into the alleged illegal mining activities in Karnataka by Andhra Pradesh-based Obalapuram Mining Company (OMC) owned by G Janardhan Reddy, Minister for Tourism and Infrastructure Development.

Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa has said the government is exploring the possibility of entering into agreement with private mining companies to mine gold, iron and manganese in the State.

He said that through Hatti Gold Mines such agreements could be drawn with foreign firms as the State lacks equipment and technology to exploit minerals.
