A sweeping set of reforms proposed for the country

The Union government has convened a meeting on May 20 on regulation of illegal mining activities in Orissa.

The co-ordination between different ministries of the Government of India (GoI) and the state government is expected to come up for discussion in the meeting to be chaired by the Union cabinet secretary.

New Delhi: The Bill to set up a regulator for the mining sector will be tabled in Monsoon Session of Parliament, effectively fast tracking the legislation as a result of the RIL-RNRL case.

The Tamil Nadu Government will frame a policy for the sustainable exploitation of mineral resources, announced the Deputy Chief Minister, Mr M.K. Stalin, in the Assembly today.

This was part of a number of initiatives in his reply to the debate in the Assembly on the demand for grants to the Industry Department.

The governmen has proposed changes in the Mining Act to bolster development works as part of its two-pronged strategy in regions under Maoist domination, which are being cleared by security forces.

The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Mr K. Rosaiah, on Sunday launched a project for online receipt and processing of mining concession application system in the State. Andhra Pradesh is the first State to launch the online process in accordance with the National Mineral Policy 2008.

The government is considering a proposal to make it mandatory for companies like Vedanta Resources and ArcelorMittal to offer shares to those displaced by their future mining projects. But the move is being opposed by the industry.
