KOLLAM: The National Board for Wildlife Protection under the Union Environment and Forest Department has accorded sanction to conduct survey and investigation work for the construction of a new dam at Mullaperiyar.

CHIEF Minister M Karunanidhi on Thursday sought Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's intervention to withdraw the decision to allow land survey for a new Mullaiperiyar dam. He said the State Government was forced to get a stay on the permission given to Kerala to undertake survey for the dam, as the Union Environment Ministry had erred in its decision.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on Thursday dashed of a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh urging him to direct the Union Minister of State for Environment and Forest to withdraw the approval to Kerala to conduct a survey for a new dam across the inter-state Mullaperiyar river.

THE BJP on Wednesday locked horns with union environment minister Jairam Ramesh on interlinking rivers across the country, maintaining that the proposal, pursued vigorously by the NDA government during its tenure at the Centre, was the only real answer to the problem of recurrent floods, and asked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to convene a conference of chief ministers on the issue.

Secretary, Ministry of Environment and Forest, Government of India, Vijay Sharma, on Tuesday paid up the fine of Rs 10,000 imposed on him by the Goa Bench of the Bombay High Court.
This is as per an order passed by the High Court dated September 14, 2009, in connection with non-filing of affidavits in the writ petitions filed by the Goa Foundation against two mining companies.
