ONCE RAVAGED BY insurgency, Mizoram is now the most peaceful state in the Northeast. But a new menace is disturbing the people and the state government there, and it is not a band of gun-totting youth but the tiny mosquito that is causing a major headache. Malaria was the biggest killer in the state last year, killing as many as 119 people.

AIZAWL, Feb 2: Malaria, which claimed 119 lives in Mizoram during last year, remains the biggest killer disease in this Northeast State. According to the Health Department records, 1,71,793 people hot their blood tested and 9,399 had tested positive for malaria during 2009. The victims aged between 1 to 64, of which 40 were females.
