Urban India is now the world's third largest garbage generator. But the amount of waste generated is not as much of an issue as the fact that over 45 million tonnes (or 3 million trucks worth) of garbage is untreated and disposed of by municipal authorities each year in an unhygienic manner.

State of Uttar Pradesh & Others dated 20/04/2017 regarding municipal solid waste management in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. With regard to implementation of MSW Rules, 2016 in the Ghaziabad Area, the Commissioner of Ghaziabad Nagar Nigam submits that it was resolved that the Ghaziabad Development Authority will identify suitable land in one patch sufficient for establishment of MSW management plant.

Judgement of the National Green Tribunal in the matter of Tapesh Bhardwaj Vs UP State Pollution Control Board & Others dated 13/04/2017 regarding dumping of garbage on the river bed of River Yamuna by Mathura Cantonment Board. The oxygen level in the River Yamuna in Mathura is close to zero and the landfill site created by the Cantonment Board is a huge contributor to this. The Board is causing destruction of the river bed and the flood plain of River Yamuna.
