CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu police on Monday arrested a 50-year-old German national who allegedly raised funds for protests against the Kudankulam nuclear power plant.

It is high time the district administration explored ways to ensure safe and scientific disposal of garbage collected from the Nagercoil municipal limit and other extension areas either in the existing compost yard at Valampurai Vilai, situated in the heart of the town or in some other places.

Nearly 10,000 persons accompanied the 127 persons observing an indefinite fast at Idinthakarai against the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Project on Monday.
Bishop of Tuticorin RC Diocese Yvon Ambroise, who participated in the fast being held near St. Lourdes Church in the coastal hamlet along with 25 priests, said that though the Union Government had spent over Rs. 13,000 crore for constructing these two nuclear reactors, it should be closed down as the lives and livelihood of people living around the project site were more valuable than the money spent.

NAGERCOIL: Kanyakumari is primarily an agrarian district with 83 per cent of its population residing in villages and 58.8 per cent of its working population engaged in agricultural and allied activities.

The Department of Forest has identified 58 varieties of water birds in different parts of the district.

Nagercoil: The Government has proposed to implement a integrated drinking water project costing Rs.79 crore to distribute potable water to the residents in and around Kanyakumari.

A government order in this connection would be issued at the earliest. Deputy Chief Minister M. K. Stalin is likely to lay foundation stone for the implementation of this project, said Tourism Minister N.
