In view of the intersectorality of NREGA, the need to create durable assets and the fact that NREGA workforce constitutes the target group of most development programme, a Task Force has been set up to explore more comprehensive and effective possibilities of convergence, latent in NREGA. The Task Force is reviewing convergence strategies for NREGA.

Sadly, NREGA, the greatest democratic experiment undertaken to reduce rural poverty, has become the stick to beat the Panchayati Raj System - the other greatest experiment of democratic decentralisation.

The experience of the Jagrut Adivasi Dalit Sangathan in Madhya Pradesh shows the power of grassroots organisational work in activating the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act. Levels of NREGA employment in the Sangathan areas are as high as 85 days per household per year, and nearly half of all working households have got 100 days of work. They also earn the minimum wage.

The Centre is preparing for a possible showdown with the states over its flagship programme National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA). The bone of contention between the two is arbitrary hike in the minimum wages by major states in the post NREGA regime, which is likely to put an additional burden on the Central exchequer by Rs 6,000 crores.

Agartala, Aug 1: The Union Ministry of Rural Development has applauded Tripura Government's performance in implementation of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) in the last fiscal.
The ministry had held review meeting of progress of key processes under NREGA in New Delhi last week with the state Nodal Officers of 16 states, including Tripura, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim, and expressed satisfaction over the performance of Tripura.
