Five years after the passage of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, now known as the MNREGA after Mahatma Gandhi, activists central to lobbying for it are seeing serious flaws in its implementation. Absence of a mechanism to deal with the flaws, they say, are defeating the purpose of the Act.

THE meeting of the standing committee on the rural development ministry on Wednesday saw members, cutting across party lines, pick up many loopholes, and complain of large-scale corruption, in the implementation of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).

The Finance Ministry has turned down a proposal for doubling the number of employment days guaranteed to below poverty line people under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA). The Rural Development Ministry had proposed doubling the minimum days for employment from 100 to 200 days and also called for linking the wage rate to the annual inflation rate.

New Delhi: The finance ministry has turned down a proposal for doubling the number of employment days guaranteed to below poverty line people under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA).

Assam, along with other northeastern States, have slipped in implementation of majority of the flagship programmes of the Ministry of Rural Development. This has emerged during the review of the performance of its flagship programmes by the Ministry on Friday.

The Ministry of Rural Development has convened a two-day meeting of the Performance Review Committee here at the ICAR Conference hall.
