Development comes on heels of Power Ministry asking Coal Ministry to relook decision on deallocation of four coal blocks

The Coal Ministry will take a call on giving back the de-allocated coal blocks of NTPC after consultations with the Law Ministry. The development comes close on the heels of Power Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia asking Coal Minister Sriprakash Jaiswal to reconsider the decision on deallocation of four coal blocks, including three alloted to NTPC.

Country's largest power producer NTPC today said its generation capacity has increased to 39,674 MW, with the commissioning of another 500 MW unit at its joint venture plant in Haryana. The third unit of 500 MW has been commissioned at the Indira Gandhi Super Thermal Power Project. The plant is run by Aravali Power Company -- a joint venture of NTPC, Haryana Power Generation Corp and Indraprastha Power Generation Corp. The plant is located in Jhajjar, Haryana.

With the November 30 deadline set by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) to wrap up fuel supply agreements (FSAs) drawing near, the Power Ministry has directed NTPC to sign the FSA with Coal India Limited (CIL) for supply of coal for its power plants.

The Power Minister, in a recent note to NTPC, asked it to sign the FSA with CIL at the earliest and not later than the November 30 deadline. The PMO had, last month, asked power companies, including NTPC, to sign fuel supply pacts by the month-end even if they don’t have binding pacts for sale of electricity.

Studies for locating geothermal reserves in India have been on for over 30 years

State-owned NTPC is likely to sign an agreement with the Chhattisgarh government to prepare a study on geothermal reserves available in the mineral rich state and advanced talks are on in this regard. "Chhattisgarh government may sign a pact with NTPC to study geothermal reserves in the state, (it) may form a Joint Venture for the same," a state government official said.

Kolkata The inter-ministerial group on coal blocks will meet on November 5 and 6 to finalise the norms for allocation of 13 de-allocated coal blocks to private sector undertakings (PSUs), said coal minister Sriprakash Jaiswal at the 38th Coal India (CIL) foundation day.

On further deallocation of coal blocks from the private sector, Jaiswal said the IMG has recommended deallocating of 13 more blocks and it has gone for the law ministry’s comments, which could come any time this week.
