The objective of the parking parking policy are: To encourage the people to use the public transport system by giving preferential treatment to public transport over motorized individual modes; To reduce the traffic congestion on roads; To reduce the people to obey the traffic rules and park the vehicles only on the places earmarked for the park

The international conference organized by CSE in New Delhi on August 17, 2011 called for a parking strategy for better management that can control traffic chaos as well as dampen parking demand & car usage.

The transport infrastructure contibutes substantially to the state's economy. Parking is a essential component of the transportation system. The parking strategy is associated with the demand and accessibility of parking lots. Against this backdrop, this study aims at analysing the demand and supply of vehicle parking in Chennai city. The various aspects of parking characteristics such as turnover, duration of parking, accumulation and volume in the parking spaces are discussed in this paper.

Global experience bears out that parking management is one of the most powerful instruments to reduce travel by personal vehicles that also influences commuting choices in favour of public transport.

In an attempt to curb the rise in both, the number of vehicles and pollution, the capital's civic bodies are deliberating a hike in one-time parking fee, which is collected by the Delhi government at the time of registration of vehicles.

Parking demand is insatiable but globally, a new set of parking principles are being adopted to restrain parking demand and personal vehicle usage to cut traffic volume, pollution and energy guzzling.
