The international conference organized by CSE in New Delhi on August 17, 2011 called for a parking strategy for better management that can control traffic chaos as well as dampen parking demand & car usage.

The transport infrastructure contibutes substantially to the state's economy. Parking is a essential component of the transportation system. The parking strategy is associated with the demand and accessibility of parking lots. Against this backdrop, this study aims at analysing the demand and supply of vehicle parking in Chennai city. The various aspects of parking characteristics such as turnover, duration of parking, accumulation and volume in the parking spaces are discussed in this paper.

Global experience bears out that parking management is one of the most powerful instruments to reduce travel by personal vehicles that also influences commuting choices in favour of public transport.

In an attempt to curb the rise in both, the number of vehicles and pollution, the capital's civic bodies are deliberating a hike in one-time parking fee, which is collected by the Delhi government at the time of registration of vehicles.
