Asiatic black bear (Ursus thibetanus) is one of the largest carnivores of Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary (WLS). This 38.97 km2 sanctuary is known to have 19 villages along its periphery and inside it and incidents of human wildlife conflict in these villages is common. However, information on conflict related to Asiatic black bear is very less.
The West Bengal Government is set to sign an agreement with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for a Rs. 400 crore long-term soft loan for the conservation of wildlife and biodiversity.
Siliguri, May 5: The forest department has taken up projects to count and study the Asiatic black bear and to find out the status of different species of butterfly in Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary.
