Adopting a tough posture, Meghalaya Chief Minister DD Lapang on Saturday said the State Government would be firm in maintaining law and order if any organisation tried to take law in their hands over the controversial uranium mining issue.

A moderate earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter Scale shook the North-East in the wee hours today with its epicentre at Myanmar-India border region, reports PTI. People ran out of their houses as the quake, biggest in the past nine years, rocked buildings triggering panic. However no reports of casualties and damage to the property were reported, police said.

Based on lessons learnt from its own uranium mining experiences, United States is ready to partner with India and share its expertise to safely mine uranium in Meghalaya without harming the environment.

Water crisis hits Shillong city
SHILLONG: Water crisis has hit people of Shillong city for the last couple of days, forcing them to buy water at a very high price.

A section of the people have questioned the delay in repairing the main feeder of Greater Shillong Water Supply at Lad Mawreng near Mawphlang which, according to the authorities, is the main cause of the water scarcity.

Meghalaya Urban Affairs department yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding with a private company to find ways to ease traffic congestion in the capital city.

The agreement was signed between the Department and Urban Mass Transit Company Limited (UMTC) to ease traffic congestion through a Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP).
