Siliguri, Jan. 7: Culling of poultry birds was completed last night in the Siliguri subdivision and the Rajganj block in the adjoining Jalpaiguri district where avian influenza had been detected on January 3.

Siliguri, Jan. 5: More than 15,000 birds were culled in the subdivision till 9.30pm today with people eager to get rid of the H5N1 virus at the earliest.

Siliguri, Jan. 4: The sale of poultry and eggs has been banned within 10km of the bird flu-affected areas of Matigara. The entire Siliguri town and Rajganj block of Jalpaiguri district will come under the ban.

Siliguri, Jan. 2: The Siliguri subdivisional administration has formed teams to search for dead chickens after 50 poultry birds were reported dead in Matigara over the past one week.

However, it is yet to be confirmed if the poultry had died of bird flu, said Sarad Dwibedi, the subdivisional officer of Siliguri.

The Darjeeling district administration has asked the departments to expedite development work in the tribal dominated areas of the Siliguri subdivision.

- Foresters find 25-30 samples of scat in five-day-long census
Foresters have found 25-30 samples of tiger faeces in the Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary during the five-day long census that ended yesterday.

The faeces or scat is the second most conclusive evidence after direct sighting to confirm the presence of big cats in a reserve forest area.
