The National Green Tribunal (Central Zone Bench, Bhopal), November 9 issued a slew of directions for protection of Sambhar lake, a Ramsar site.

The matter related to removal of encroachment on a water body named Govardhan Sagar in the city of Ujjain. ADM, Ujjain informed the court on the status and progress for removal of encroachment. On the discharge of untreated water into the water body, the court has been informed that the Madhya Pradesh Pollution Control Board has calculated the compensation to the tune of Rs. 150 Lakhs (Rupees One Crore Fifty Lakhs).

The application sought a direction to Apollo Tyres Limited to stop the improper or illegal disposal of the HDPE PP/carbon jumbo bags as per law and direct the authorities to take appropriate action. Carbon black is one of the main components in the manufacture of tyres. After the carbon black is used by Apollo Tyres, the bags carrying them are sent outside either through the recycler or by any other agency.

The report points out that there are 672 industries in the area who are members of common effluent treatment plant (CETP), Ahmedabad Hand Screen Printing Association (AHSPA), but the report deals with only 55 industries. The zero liquid discharge (ZLD) units in the area as given by Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) was 55 units only - whereas to the best of knowledge of the applicant total ZLD units in the area is more than 200.

The matter related to pollution caused by M/s. D. D. Steel & Power Limited. It was alleged that highly polluting industrial effluents were being discharged directly into the air and nearby drains and fields also inflicting damage to local flora.
