Union minister and Ranchi MP Subodh Kant Sahay has come forward to help the Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) tide over an acute water crisis.

At a crucial meeting to discuss the water situation in the city today, the Congress leader announced to cough up Rs 5 lakh from his area development fund to buy water tanks and install them in localities that have been worst hit this summer.

NEW DELHI: Water consumers who switch on their motors to fill their overhead tanks and then forget to switch them off will now have more to worry about than just inflated power bills. The Delhi Jal Board has decided to penalise such consumers who waste water by letting their tanks overflow.

Zilla Panchayat president G Mangamma Muniswamy has sought a comprehensive report on water scarcity in the district.

The High Court on Tuesday ordered notices to the Chief Secretary, Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike, Bangalore Development Authority, Lake Development Authority, Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board and DCF of Bangalore South for inaction in rejuvenating 144 lakes within BBMP limits.

As many as 1,224 tanks from 9 districts will be developed at a cost of Rs 306 crore under the second stage of the Watershed Project, announced Minister for Smalla Irrigation Govind Karajol.

He was speaking ata press meet here on Sunday. Under the world bank project following developing of 1224 tanks, 97,000 hectares of catchment area will be stabilised, he said.

A total of 130 natural tanks in Chikmagalur district are being developed with the assistance of World Bank.

As many as 40 tanks of Tarikere taluk have been brought under this project, said MLA D S Suresh.

He was speaking after inaugurating a participatory rural study programme organised by Water Resources Department at Yarehalli village in the taluk.

Kolar MLA Varthur Prakash performed ground breaking ceremony for the construction of overhead tanks at Jangalahalli, Guragunjigurki and Nernahalli villages in the taluk on Monday.

The tanks are being constructed under Rural Water Supply Scheme of Panchayat Raj Department.
