In a bid to curb encroachment of tanks, the minor irrigation department has taken up a project to fence 3,600 tanks across the State coming under its jurisdiction.

Sediment deposition as a result of soil erosion is a significant problem in the village water tanks. In order to increase the rainwater storage capacity, removal of sediments from water tanks was taken up under the State Government Water Conservation Programme in Medak District, Andhra Pradesh, India.

In February 2007 an agreement was signed between the World Bank, the Central Government, and Tamil Nadu state government for a mega project titled Irrigated Agriculture Modernization & Water-bodies Restoration & Management (IAMWARM). The project cost of US $556 million (Rs 2,547 Cr) was met through a loan from the World Bank.
