SHILLONG, Feb 15: The Meghalaya Government has finally notified constitution of a Joint Committee on Uranium Mining in Meghalaya (JCUMM) comprising 32 members even as the three-month period for submission of its report to the government lapsed on February 4.

SHILLONG: The State government has formed a 33-member committee to go into the various aspects of uranium mining in the West Khasi Hills district.

MUMBAI: Owing to a critical shortage of indigenously produced uranium, only three of India's 17 nuclear reactors are working to their full potential. Data available with TOI shows 11 nuclear reactors were not functioning up to the mark and three others remained completely shut down for long-term maintenance till November 2009.

Officials from the United States, France and Russia called on Monday for stronger measures against Tehran after Iran told the United Nations nuclear watchdog agency that it would begin enriching its stockpile of uranium for a medical reactor in Tehran as early as Tuesday.

Mining and processing of uranium ore was started in several parts of eastern Singhbhum, viz. Jaduguda, Bhatin and Narwapahar (Jharkhand) in 1968. Radioactivity in the mine tailings has to be consolidated so that it does not emanate in the atmosphere or enter the food chain.

Asserting that Canada has vast reserves of uranium with two third of oil reserves, Barnala-born Canadian MP Devinder Shory has claimed that Canadian Prime Minister has inked supply of adequate quantity of uranium for its use in promoting technology in India for civil purpose.
