The successful captive breeding of vultures belonging to three critically endangered species in the flagship conservation centre at Pinjore in Haryana could be a turning point in the struggle to save these birds from extinction in the subcontinent.

Mumbai : The Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) has for the first time successfully bred in captivity 16 vultures through artificial incubation at its breeding centre at Pinjore, Haryana. The Vulture Conservation Breeding Centre (VCBC) has also rescued an injured white-backed bird of prey from Ahmedabad.

Count Is Expected To Register A Drop Of 35 Per Cent Over Last Census Figure Of 1,431

Ahmedabad: The vulture count in the state may for the first time plummet to three digits, registering a drop of over 35 per cent over the last count in 2007 that was 1,431. The good news, however, is that the city of Ahmedabad has more or less maintained its count of 270 vultures.

Ahmedabad: The ropeway project on the Girnar mountain could be in trouble. The vulture census which ended on Monday has revealed 22 nesting sites in the region and presence of about 69 vultures in the area. Wildlife experts have been opposing this project for fear that it would have an adverse impact on the vulture conservation programme.

Ahmedabad: More than 25 volunteers and representatives from city-based Non-Government Organisations (NGOs) participated in the discussion, held at Van Chetna Kendra on Sunday, on the Gyps vulture census in Ahmedabad, Mehsana and Gandhinagar.
