Ahmedabad: Two carcasses of white rumped vultures were found from the campus of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad on Thursday. Both birds were about a year old.
Mahuva (Bhavnagar): Students in schools of Mahuva have taken the lead in vulture conservation and developing feeding sites for the endangered species. According to officials, there were over 140 vultures in the area in 2005. The number fell to below 30 in the 2007 census. According to a rough estimate there are now over 90-odd vultures in Mahuva taluka.
Vultures might be getting spotted in the wild but their near-stagnant population does not make it look like a real revival.
Lucknow: The decline of vultures has been the fastest among many other species. Their near-extinction in past one decade, ever since 40 vulture deaths were reported from Rajasthan in 1997, has made vulture-conservation a raging national issue.
The Girnar ropeway project, which was taken up for discussion by the standing committee of the National Board for Wild Life (NBWL) on Wednesday, has also been referred to the expert and technical panel to find out if it would hamper vulture conservation in that area.

Ahmedabad: Environmentalists are crying hoarse over extinction of vultures in the state. Experts say the population of the bird across India is 900. In Ahmedabad and nearby areas, it has been rapidly dwindling with less than 40 existing right now. The population stood at 200 just three to four years back.
