The city Corporation on Monday conducted a workshop for councillors to create awareness on the decentralised source-level waste treatment project.

A pilot project for household-level solid waste treatment units will take off at the Muttada ward on November 15. Around 250 units, including biogas plants and vermicompost and ring compost pits, will be installed at Muttada under the project.

Five agencies, shortlisted for providing solid waste treatment units such as biogas plants, vermicompost, and ring compost to city households, demonstrated their products at a meeting chaired by Mayor K. Chandrika here on Saturday. The initiative is part of the decentralised garbage treatment project of the city Corporation.

Processing at source may be made mandatory
Kerala may be in for stringent legislation on waste management as waste remains a major environmental and health hazard in the State.

The Legislature Committee on Environment recommended in its report submitted early this year that law should be brought to make waste processing mandatory at the source itself. Housing colonies, hotels and restaurants, resorts, hospitals, hostels, slaughterhouses, and markets should not be allowed to function if they failed to treat their waste.
