The Mahul-Sewri mudflats are one of the 160 wetlands in the country which qualify for the Ramsar Criteria, according to the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS), which released the list on the eve of World Wetlands Day.
The Mahul-Sewri mudflats have been the homes for thousands of migratory birds, mostly flamingos.

These Rules, which for the first time lay down legally enforceable provisions for the conservation and management of Wetlands, have been drafted to ensure better conservation and management and to prevent further degradation of existing wetlands in India.
Hyderabad, Sept. 6: In September 2003 the state government issued orders asking district officials to take necessary steps to identify all lands covered by water bodies such as tanks, rivulets, ponds, lakes, river bodies and others, and include them in the Prohibitory Order Book.
