The Ministry of Environment and Forests notified the Wetlands (Conservation and Management) Rules, 2010. These Rules, which for the first time lay down legally enforceable provisions for the conservation and management of Wetlands, have been drafted to ensure better conservation and management and to prevent further degradation of existing wetlands in India.

Hyderabad, Sept. 6: In September 2003 the state government issued orders asking district officials to take necessary steps to identify all lands covered by water bodies such as tanks, rivulets, ponds, lakes, river bodies and others, and include them in the Prohibitory Order Book. This was done in order to protect and conserve all wetlands.

A Division Bench of Andhra Pradesh High Court has ordered notices in a case filed challenging the permission accorded by the Government to set up a coal-based power plant near Sompeta in Srikakulam district.

The state of Punjab has been left with less than 1% of the area under wetlands. About 30 wetlands, most of which are of natural origin were reported to occur in the state although some have already lost their wetland characteristics.

Except 2008, the Keoladeo national park in Rajasthan has been receiving little or no water for the past six years. A seasonal breach of a dam upstream was the source of the water till 2003, the year the breach was repaired. Nobody at the time thought of the repercussions on the park. This year does not promise to be different.
