The matters related to increased urban flooding in Delhi and its connection to the disappearance of water bodies in the capital. In compliance with decisions taken by the Integrated Drain Management Cell (IDMC) in its 17th meeting held on April 18, 2024, DPCC, May 20, 2024 received two lists of 1045 and 322 water bodies along with geo-coordinates from Wetland Authority of Delhi. These lists were forwarded to concerned District Magistrates for ground truthing.

The matter is related to the protection of Benital lake.

It has been reported that the size of the lake has reduced to the extent of 0.116 hectare out of the original size of 2 hectares. The lake has a positive role on groundwater recharge, vegetation, ecological stability of the area and in ensuring safe and clean water supply to about 6 villages.

Wetlands are important ecosystems that provide benefits such as flood control, water purification, and biodiversity conservation. In India, however, wetlands are threatened by pollution, encroachment, and rampant real estate development.
