Order of the National Green Tribunal in the matter of Radhey Mohan Misra Vs State of Uttar Pradesh & Others dated 12/03/2018 regarding identification and declaration of wetlands in Uttar Pradesh. The State of Uttar Pradesh submits before NGT the publication of the notification under the Provisions of Rule 7 of the Wetland ( Conservation and Management) Rules, 2017 on 09th March, 2018. Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change submits that State Government acted under the provisions of the new Wetland Rules.

Wetlands cover 5–10% of the earth’s terrestrial surface. They are important ecosystems that supply goods and services for human wellbeing.

Bed sediment samples were collected along the 9.5 km long inlet channel of Chilika lagoon, east coast of India during low freshwater discharge and low rainfall condition. Distributions of bed sediment along with its texture were studied in detail. Bivariate plots between mean, sorting, skewness and kurtosis of sediments revealed definite grouping pattern. The study, through C-M plot, indicates that the prime factors for transportation of sediment within inlet channel of Chilika lagoon are rolling and bottom suspension during period of low discharge and low rainfall (November-June).

The new rules, notified by the environment ministry, decentralise wetlands management by giving states powers to not only identify and notify wetlands within their jurisdictions but also keep a watch on prohibited activities.

Question raised in Lok Sabha on Management of Wetlands, 25/07/2017. 115 wetlands in 24 States and two Union Territories have been identified for conservation and management under the National Wetland Conservation Programme (NWCP) of the Ministry. Question raised in Lok Sabha on Protection of Lakes/Ponds, 21/03/2017. The Central Government has notified the Wetlands (Conservation and Management) Rules, 2010 under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 to regulate various activities within the notified wetlands, including lakes and ponds.

Order of the Supreme Court of India in the matter of M. K. Balakrishnan & Others Vs Union of India & Others dated 31/01/2017 regarding wetland conservation in India.

Apex Court wants to whether the Draft Wetlands (Conservation and Management) Rules, 2016 which were said to have been circulated some time in March, 2016 have been finalized or not and, if not, reasons for the delay. Supreme Court also asks the Union of India to specify the steps taken to preserve the 26 wetlands covered by the Ramsar Convention, 1971.
