Question raised in Rajya Sabha on Conservation of wetlands, 25/07/2016. As per National Wetland Atlas published by the Space Applications Centre (SAC), Ahmedabad in 2011, there are a total of 7,57,060 wetlands in the country occupying 15.26 million hectare area (around 4.63% of the geographic area of the country). These include lakes/ponds, ox-bow lakes, high altitude & riverine wetlands, waterlogged areas, rivers/streams, tanks, reservoirs, lagoons, creeks, sand beaches, corals, mangroves, mud flats, salt pans, aquaculture ponds, etc.

Order of the National Green Tribunal in the matter of Anand Arya Vs. Union of India dated 22/07/2016 regarding state of wetlands in India. Tribunal directs the Ministry of Environment & Forests, & CC to file an Affidavit stating as to how many times till date the Central Wet Lands Regulatory Authority has met and the dates and Minutes thereof and asked the Central Wet Lands Regulatory Authority to meet henceforth every month and take up matter of all the States in relation to identification and notification of wet lands all over the country.

Question raised in Rajya Sabha on National Wetland Conservation Programme, 18/07/2016. 115 wetlands in 24 States and two Union Territories are identified for conservation and management under the NWCP. The State-wise/year-wise list of these wetlands is given in Annexure-I. The State Governments undertake activities for conservation and management of wetlands funded under NWCP/NPCA through its concerned agencies. The Ministry and the State Level Steering Committees monitor the implementation/execution of the programme.

Question raised in Lok Sabha on Conservation of Wetlands, 03/05/2016. The Ministry has so far, identified 115 wetlands in 24 States and two Union Territories for conservation and management under the National Wetland Conservation Programme (NWCP). The State-wise list of these wetlands is given in Annexure.

The Central Government had published the Wetlands (Conservation and Management) Rules, 2010 vide notification number G.S.R. 951(E), dated the e December, 2010 to regulate various activities within the wetlands in the country.
