Estimation of carbon abatement potential of energy consumption in rural areas of India

Access to sustainable energy is vital for the socio-economic development of rural India and overall growth of the country. A number of energy initiatives by the Government of India and the states are contributing towards improving energy access. However, the challenge of access to energy and coping with the highly unsustainable practices is still immense. Inefficiency and unsustainability aspects of energy-use in rural India present a huge opportunity to abate carbon emissions. This study explores sustainable low-carbon growth paths and delineates findings and interpretations for two low-carbon growth scenario - moderate and aggressive, compared with a BAU scenario.
