India: taking on climate change - twenty recent initiatives related to climate change

This document details the recent initiatives being undertaken by the Ministry of environment and Forests to address the issue of climate change. These are in the field of forestry, energy efficiency, research agenda and CDM capacities.

While India finalizes the details of the Missions under its National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC), there are several other initiatives being undertaken and facilitated by the Government of India to address the issue of climate change.

Recognising the role of forests as a carbon sink, India is promoting afforestation on an unprecedented scale. India, which has a fifth of its area under forests, is one of the few developing countries in the world where the forest cover is increasing, by 0.8 million hectares a year, despite the pressures of population growth and rapid economic development.
