Minister for Science and Technology, Animal and Sheep Husbandry, Aga Syed Ruhullah today said that Government has taken up a mega project of providing solar home lights to 40,000 un-electrified households of remote and far-flung areas which include Doda, Reasi, Ramban and Kupwara.

The work on Sawalkote hydroelectric project, whose fate is hanging in balance for several decades, will take off shortly if the recommendations of the Negotiating Committee are accepted by the State Cabinet, which is going to discuss the interim report of the panel at 5.30 pm tomorrow.

Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah on Monday underscored the need for better utilization of non conventional resources of energy available in the State stressing on replacement of installations run on conventional energy by the new and renewable energy resources wherever possible.

"This would shift the pressure on hydro electric power supply and help to divert it for other important uses", he added.
