Uttrakhand Environment Protection Pollution Control Board (UEPPCB), Dehradun has awarded a project on Action Plan for ambient Air Quality Improvement of Dehradun City to Pollution Control Research Institute, BHEL Haridwar, as Dehradun is an important tourist place because of pilgrimage due to holy Ganga River.

The Government announced that India’s forest and tree cover has increased by 5, 081 sq km. While the total forest cover of the country has increased by 3, 775 sq km, the tree cover has gone up by 1, 306 sq km.

The Urban Directorate, Government of Uttarakhand has prepared a draft State Level Action Plan for the management, handling and disposal of municipal solid waste in accordance with the Municipal Solid Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 2000. The said draft action plan has been prepared with active consultation with all stake holders i.e.

Community managed micro/mini hydro power projects with effective support and partnership with public and private sector has the potential to sustainably address the unmet demand of energy in rural areas of Uttarakhand.

The Code - sustainable management of forests and biodiversity — has stressed the need to carry out forest conservation without affecting the livelihood of villagers. It has been prepared by the Forest Research Institute, Dehradun.

The forest department of Uttarakhand has 13 circles, 44 divisions, 284 ranges and 1569 beat..The human population of the State is 101.167 lacs (2011) compared to 25.18 lacs in 1951 and that of livestock is 76.16 lacs in 2007 as compared to 41.68 lacs (1993) and 38.692 in 1972. The human and livestock population is largely dependent on forests due to Agrarian economy and age old pastoralism leading to heavy pressure on forests and consequent degradation of ecology and environment of the area.
