RAMPURHAT, Jan. 18: Now that the deadly H5N1 virus has reared its ugly head in the state once again, the health department has asked authorities of the Rampurhat SD Hospital to keep its isolation ward ready to tackle possible outbreaks of Bird Flu in the area.
KOLKATA: West Bengal will soon get a Bio-Security Level III Disease Diagnostic Laboratory, which will considerably decrease the time span to examine avian flu samples and detect the disease.
Bird flu or Avian influenza is a viral zoonotic disease caused by influenza virus. It transmits from bird to human being and vice-versa, hence it is under the group of zoonotic disease. It creates havoc at present in different parts of Assam, mainly in the greater Kamrup district. It is not only the public health hazard but also a great economical losts for the poultry industry.

Siliguri, Jan. 7: Culling of poultry birds was completed last night in the Siliguri subdivision and the Rajganj block in the adjoining Jalpaiguri district where avian influenza had been detected on January 3.

Siliguri, Jan. 5: More than 15,000 birds were culled in the subdivision till 9.30pm today with people eager to get rid of the H5N1 virus at the earliest.

Siliguri, Jan. 4: The sale of poultry and eggs has been banned within 10km of the bird flu-affected areas of Matigara. The entire Siliguri town and Rajganj block of Jalpaiguri district will come under the ban.

Siliguri, Jan. 2: The Siliguri subdivisional administration has formed teams to search for dead chickens after 50 poultry birds were reported dead in Matigara over the past one week.
However, it is yet to be confirmed if the poultry had died of bird flu, said Sarad Dwibedi, the subdivisional officer of Siliguri.
