Karnataka will set in motion today the process of acquiring 4,800 acres in Bellary for the mega steel plant being set up by ArcelorMittal, a top official said.

BANGALORE: The Karnataka government on Friday issued the preliminary notification to acquire 4,800 acres of land in Kudutini in Bellary district for a six-million-tonne steel plant worth Rs. 30,000 crore to be set up by the global giant ArcelorMittal.

Bangalore: A team of officials from South Korean steel major Posco would visit Karnataka in mid-February to appraise the land parcels available in the state in order to set up their proposed integrated steel plant, a top Karnataka government official said.

Sustaining a ban on mining activities by Bellary brothers in Andhra Pradesh, the Supreme Court on Thursday asked the Andhra Pradesh High Court to decide on the plea against the ban within four weeks.

In what appears to be an undisguised means to woo global steel magnate ArcelorMittal chairman Laxmi N Mittal, the Karnataka Government has notified 300 hectares of mining area in Bellary district.

BELLARY: Santa Sheela Nair, Secretary, Union Ministry of Mines, has sought the intervention of S.V. Ranganath, Chief Secretary, government of Karnataka, and Vijai Sharma, Secretary, Ministry of Environment and Forests, New Delhi, to permit officials of the Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM) to enter the mines within the forest areas.

Taking strong exception to the alleged prevention of Central Government officials from inspecting illegal mines in Hospet in Bellary district, the Centre has directed Karnataka to allow them free access to all mines.

HOSPET (BELLARY DISTRICT): For the second consecutive day on Tuesday, officials belonging to the Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM) were prevented by the Forest Department from entering the mining area in Vyasanakere in Hospet taluk for undertaking a survey following the directions of the Karnataka High Court in connection with the border dispute between the two mines

Two steel giants, ArcelorMittal and POSCO, were granted the green signal on Tuesday, with the High Level Clearance Committee headed by Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa according an in-principle approval for implementing their mega steel manufacturing projects.
