The Union home ministry wants state governments to take proactive action against illegal mining as it has become a national security threat.

In a recent meeting with the states, the home ministry said that windfall profits from such mining of minerals and sand were being used by the mafia to aid extremist elements.

CBI officials today questioned Karnataka ministers Janardhana Reddy and Sreeramulu over alleged illegal mining activities by a company owned by them in the state and neighbouring Andhra Pradesh.

Bellary: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday began its inquiry into the alleged illegal mining in the Bellary reserve forest, which straddles neighbouring Anantapur district in Andhra Pradesh. The mining firms include the Obulapuram Mining Company (OMC) owned by Karnataka Ministers G. Janardhan Reddy, G. Karunakara Reddy and B. Sriramulu.
