Two UMPP bids in April as govt plugs power gaps

THE government will bid out at least two ultra mega power projects (UMPPs) of 4000mw each in April 2010 to make up for the slippage in power capacity addition in previous years, a senior power ministry official said.

Wetlands that neutralise toxins encroached upon

May 27: Environmentalists are up in arms over the encroachment of wetlands. They maintain that wetlands serve to neutralise the toxins discharged through industrial effluents and domestic sewage, before letting the water
percolate down into the earth to replenish aquifers.

 Coasting on unclarity

Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) notification 1991: The CRZ area is defined as coastal stretches of seas, bays, estuaries, creeks, rivers, backwaters, all influenced by tidal action (in the landward side). The CRZ area is up to 500 metres from the high tide line and the land between the low tide line and high tide line.
