The weather-based scheme aims at providing insurance to the cultivator against adverse weather such as deficit and excessive rainfall, frost, heat (temperature) and relative humidity, which affect the crops.

The weather-based crop insurance scheme will be implemented in the ongoing rabi season for nine crops in 15 districts in the State.

The state agriculture minister, Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil, on Tuesday said the recent untimely rains damaged crops on 2.47 million acres in the state, affecting 1.3 million farmers.

He said the state cabinet would decide on the compensation and financial assistance to the farmers at a meeting on Wednesday.

Hyderabad, July 20: The Chief Minister, Mr K. Rosaiah, on Tuesday, called upon farmers to make use of the weather-based crop insurance scheme.

Mr Rosaiah said that the government has decided to extend the scheme to other districts and crops like cotton, oil palm and sweet lime after the pilot project for the chilli crop in Guntur yielded good results.
